Students at NSS were pumped to the max with excitement for a visit with K-9 Officers- Rocky, from Riverhead Police Department, and Hudzin from Southold Police Department. Officer Morris trained Rocky, and Officer Mele trained Hudzin. Although the two trained together, their dogs must stay separate. We learned that each K-9 Officer is an alpha-male, so joining the two wouldn't be in their best interest!
Officers Mele and Morris explained that their dogs are from over-seas, and know commands in German. The K-9s were very obedient dogs! Their abilities and knowledge surpassed any dog I know!
Officer Brewer was here as well, and he explained many of the important duties these dogs have.
Their tasks include seeking criminals, missing persons, drugs, and various items. We were able to see an amazing presentation of Hudzin as well!

Yesterday's trip to the Refuge was phenomenal. Our guide, Miss Renee, gave an educational tour throughout the trip. We hiked a mile around Old Ice Pond, where we learned that many, many years ago the pond was used to harvest ice blocks. The foliage and flowers provide homes to many birds, animals, and insects including honey bees.

If you are in New Suffolk at 8:30 am, Monday through Friday, you can be sure to hear our school bell ring to commemorate the start of the school day.
Typically, one student enters the building to ring the bell, and it signals for the rest of our student body to enter. But why not change things up a bit? Moms and Dads wanted in on the action! Below are some great pictures of the students sharing their bell-ringing duties with their families. Enjoy!
New Suffolk School had a bunch of fun celebrating the first week of spring! Although it was a bit chilly, we braved the cold to brighten up our schoolyard. A big thanks to Mrs. Cooper and the NS Enrichment Fund for supplying us with beautiful pansies to plant. The students had a blast getting their hands dirty, and of course digging for worms!
We warmed up inside with an enjoyable spring egg hunt! The children explored throughout the school to find their cleverly hidden treats!
